Josiah Smith (1789-1876) was a resident of Lexington, Mass., making his living as a cobbler and fifer for various military companies. A War of 1812 veteran, he became a pensioner in 1872. Smith also invested in Maine Land, a tract then called the Eastern Indian Township. Much of his property appears to have been lost through bankruptcy proceedings during the 1840's. Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.
